Growing up in the Lake District, David’s earliest musical experiences were shaped by both performance and composition, winning distinctions in competitions from a young age. He read Music at Girton College, University of Cambridge, graduating with a first-class degree and receiving the Margaret Anderson Academic Prize and Violet Jenkinson Prize for outstanding academic achievement. He subsequently completed an MA in Composition at University of York, graduating with distinction.

David’s music has been recognised in a number of prestigious competitions, including the Robin Johnson Choral Composition Prize (2021), the Harlow Chorus Composition Competition (2022), and the Charles Wood Composers’ Competition (2024). His works have been published and performed by choirs and ensembles of all sizes, and are regularly programmed in concert and cathedral settings.
